Attenuated total reflection spectroscopy in the Far Ultraviolet region

Yusuke Morisawa

Abstract
The wavelength region shorter than 200 nm, so called Far-Ultraviolet (FUV), is very rich in information about the electronic states and structure of a molecule. Because condensed-phase materials with high molecular density do not transmit in the FUV region, we are developing a FUV spectroscopy based on attenuated total reflection (ATR) that enables us to measure spectra of liquid and solid samples in the FUV region. We showed that spectroscopy in the FUV region holds considerable promise not only in basic science but also in applications. This talk consists of five parts: (1) introduction to FUV spectroscopy, (2) development of new FUV spectrometers, (4) FUV studies of liquid water and aqueous solutions, (5) FUV study of s orbital in the organic molecules.
