Stimulated Brillouin Scattering at High Wavevectors

This study uses extreme ultraviolet pulses ro create transient gratings in a β−Ga2O3 single crystal. Besides the commonly observed acoustic modes parallel to the surface, the sharp penetration depths launches perpendicular modes with a broad wavevector spectrum. Interference between the backwards-diffracted TG signal and the stimulated Brillouin backscattering of the probe, allowed to measure the dynamics of selected modes with wavevector significantly larger than the TG one.

This study suggests the potential for bridging the wavevector range accessible by inelastic hard x-ray and thermal neutron scattering techniques, and the one accessible through Brillouin scattering of visible and UV light.
